Lineup, schedule announced for
10-day Berks Jazz Fest;
individual concert tickets go on sale Saturday at 10 a.m.
From
its preview concert, "Jazz Under the Stars," in the Reading Public Museum Neag
Planetarium on to the grand finale, "The Gospel According to Jazz," the 23rd
annual Boscov's Berks Jazz Fest will emphasize community, collaboration and,
most importantly, a great variety of music.
Tickets for all the major concerts will go on sale Saturday at 10 a.m. for the
annual festival, presented by the Berks Arts Council.

Berks Jazz Fest fans will find much to choose from in a lineup that features
everything from smooth to straight-ahead jazz, blues to be-bop, big band to
Latin. And, of course, midnight jams on both weekends.
The official opening night of the festival, Friday, April 5, will feature two
concerts by past festival favorites -- pianist Keiko Matsui at the Miller Center
for the Arts and, performing with the Reading Symphony Orchestra during their
100th anniversary season, singer Dianne Reeves (photo above) at the
Sovereign Performing Arts Center.

A Peter White Christmas: Tickets remain for 7 p.m.
show
The
annual Boscov's Berks Jazz Fest holiday show is set for this Sunday.
"A Peter White Christmas featuring Rick Braun and Mindi Abair" will be presented
on Sunday at the Miller Center for the Arts located on the campus of
Reading Area Community College.
Shows are at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Tickets available for 7 p.m. show.

Esperanza Spalding will be one of the major headliners during the
23rd annual Boscov's Berks Jazz Fest.
The young bassist, vocalist, composer will be performing on Tuesday, April 9,
7:30 p.m., at the Scottish Rite Cathedral Performing Arts Center.
That's the good news!
Now for the better news!
Esperanza Spalding is offering a free
download of the song "City of Roses" from her Radio Music Society CD to
all fans who purchase tickets to her Berks Jazz Fest concert. Now that is a
win-win deal.
Spalding was one of the biggest breakout stars of 2011 -- not just in jazz, but
in all genres of music. Her receipt of the 2011 Grammy Award for Best New Artist
was unprecedented -- the first time a jazz musician had won the award.
Esperanza Spalding will be touring with her
11-piece Radio Music Society ensemble -- also the name of her current CD --
featuring a seven-piece horn section.
After reviewing Esperanza's concert, Rick Nowlin of the Pittsburgh
Post-Gazette recently wrote: "Let's cut to the chase. If you ever have
the chance to see Esperanza Spalding in concert, consider it a bargain at twice

Whalum,
Butler, McClurkin
to headline festival finale
The final concert of the Boscov's Berks
Jazz Fest will be a special "Gospel According to Jazz Celebration," that will be
headlined by
Kirk Whalum,
Jonathan Butler, and
Donnie McClurkin.
The concert is set for Sunday, April 14, 7 p.m., at the Scottish Rite Cathedral.
"This is going to be an awesome concert," said Whalum, who will serve
as musical director for the show that also will feature his band.
Whalum and Butler have been blending jazz and gospel music throughout their
outstanding careers.
Vocalist and minister
McClurkin is one of the biggest names in gospel music. He has won three Grammy awards, 10
Stellar awards, two BET awards, two Soul Train awards, a Dove award and a NAACP
Image award for his work. |

Reading Pops Orchestra joins
forces with saxophonist Neu
The Reading Pops Orchestra continues
its popular Sunday with the Pops series with the annual holiday concert on
Sunday, Dec. 9, at the Miller Center for the Arts located on the Reading
Community College Campus.
The 3 p.m. concert will feature special guest
Andrew Neu, the dynamic saxophonist who is a regular performer at the Berks Jazz Fest.
Pops conductor Dr. Willis Rapp and Neu have put together an outstanding program
of holiday classics and several selections from Neu's songbook.
From his appearances with Peter Nero & The Philly Pops and the Philadelphia
Orchestra to his live performances touring with Bobby Caldwell, Diane Schuur and
Smokey Robinson, Andrew Neu is one of the most exciting multi-genre musicians
today.
