Gerald Albright
Saxophonist Gerald Albright takes a break from his busy schedule to talk to Diane Dayton of Cool Jazz Cafe about performances at Berks Jazz Fest. Gerald has three shows performances at DoubleTree by Hilton Reading Grand Ballroom, starting with Berks Bop Night on Wednesday, April 11, at 7:30 p.m. There is a fun collaboration at the Berks All- Star Jazz Jam on Thursday, April 12, at 8 p.m. Gerald Albright ‘s show featuring guests Kenny Lattimore and Selina Albright is Friday, April 13, at 10 p.m. Gerald shares thoughts about this show with these wonderful vocalists and having some daddy-daughter time. His new album “30” is his 19th career CD, he gives the details about this exciting project of audience favorites!  Music connects us and he shares how enriching this experience can be.


Brian Culbertson

Brian Culbertson brings a fully visual show to Berks Jazz Fest this year and talks to Diane Dayton of Cool Cafe about the details. Brian has a No. 1 single from his latest release and the Colors of Love Tour is opening night Friday, April 6, at 7:30 p.m. at Santander Performing Arts Center. This show has video screens, interesting lighting, a grand piano and is a three-part concert that takes us on a musical journey of new music, old favorites, love songs and the funk. Brian’s Napa Valley Jazz Getaway in June will bring another new wine from Brian by popular request, a Moscato, he gives some details. Berks Jazz Fest is a favorite stop for Brian and he shares thoughts about the fest and the fans that attend.


Keiko Matsui

Fest favorite Keiko Matsui talks to Diane Dayton of Cool Jazz Cafe from Russia during her tour and gives us a look at her time there. Keiko will be at Berks Jazz Fest with EPK: Euge Groove, Peter White, Keiko Matsui on Saturday, April 14, at 7 p.m. at Scottish Rite Cathedral. Keiko talks about the show and what we can expect with this collaboration at Berks, a festival that she really enjoys. Keiko is working on various projects including solo piano, electric band, acoustic band and her orchestra show that was at Berks Jazz Fest several years ago. Keiko gives thoughts about how music has no borders, a magical element and shared moments with the audience.

 

Karen Briggs
Amazing violinist Karen Briggs returns to Berks Jazz Fest and talks with Diane Dayton of Cool Jazz Cafe. Karen shares thoughts on the stellar artists that are a part of the Special EFX All-Stars show that she is part of on Friday, April 6, at 7:30 p.m., at the Inn at Reading with Chieli Minucci, Eric Marienthal, Lao Tizer and Gerald Veasley. Karen is part of the Midnight Jams on the first weekend of fest. She talks about the energy and camaraderie for the artists and the audience. Details on the recent release from Lao Tizer and the band Tizer “Songs from the Swing House.” Karen talks about her new project with artist collaborations scheduled to be released in early 2019. Music is important to our society, Karen gives thoughts about that, what she feels on stage and sharing music from her heart.

 

Vanessa Collier
Vocalist, saxophonist and songwriter Vanessa Collier talks with Diane Dayton as she returns to Berks Jazz Fest. Vanessa performs on Saturday, April 14, at the Inn at Reading with afternoon and evening shows with Ana Popovic, providing info on her high energy show. Vanessa talks about when she picked up the sax, the influence of her teachers, and how she became a singer. Vanessa had a double major at Berklee College of music and has played with Willie Nelson and Annie Lennox. Touring with Joe Louis Walker taught her many things. Vanessa shares how that experience has helped to shape who she is and what she does. She shares her thoughts on her third album, “Honey Up,” which is scheduled to be released in July 2018.

 

Nick Colionne
Nick Colionne talks to Diane Dayton about performances at Berks Jazz Fest. Nick is part of the Pieces of a Dream show on Saturday, April 7, 2 p.m., at DoubleTree; he shares thoughts about the energy of this show. Nick joins the many artists performing at the Remembering Chuck Loeb tribute on Sunday, April 8, 7 p.m., at Santander Performing Arts Center; Nick reflects on his relationship with Chuck. Gerald Veasley’s Midnight Jams are part of Nick’s schedule again this year at The Inn at Reading as well as the Berks All-Star Jazz Jam, 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 12, at the DoubleTree. On the last day of the fest, Nick is part of Steve Cole & Friends Sunday Brunch at 10 a.m. at the Inn at Reading. Nick’s latest CD — “The Journey” — had five billboard singles and now he is releasing his new CD “Just Being Me” at the Fest.

 

Eric Marienthal
Grammy winning saxophonist Eric Marienthal shares time with Diane Dayton discussing his performances at Berks Jazz Fest. Eric is part of Special EFX All-Stars on Friday, April 6, 7:30 p.m. at The Inn at Reading; Gerald Veasley’s Midnight Jams on April 6 and 7 at the Inn at Reading; as well as the Berks All-Star Jazz Jam on Thursday, April 12, 8 p.m. at DoubleTree. Eric is musical director of the Remembering Chuck Loeb tribute on Sunday, April 8, 7 p.m., Santander Performing Arts Center; he shares the impressive list of musicians that are a part of this out pouring of love. Eric is busy on Monday, April 9, with the RMF Project 7 p.m., at the Inn at Reading; his show on Tuesday, April 10, the Music of Cannonball Adderley at Club ECP at 7:30 p.m., and the Berks Bop Night on Wednesday, April 11, 7:30 p.m., at DoubleTree. Eric gives details about his new project with Chick Corea.

 

Bob James
Grammy winning keyboardist, arranger, producer and founder of Fourplay, Bob James, talks with Diane Dayton about performances at Berks Jazz Fest. Bob shares thoughts on the early years of the band; how Kirk Whalum became the next member; and reflects on the influence and impact of Chuck Loeb on Fourplay. Fourplay is scheduled Saturday, April 7 at 10 p.m. at DoubleTree by Hilton Reading. Artists from all over the world will be a part of the Remembering Chuck Loeb tribute on Sunday, April 8, at 7 p.m. at Santander Performing Arts Center. Bob  gives insight on what the Berks Jazz Fest meant to Chuck Loeb.


Maysa Leak
Fabulous vocalist Maysa Leak talks to Diane Dayton about her appearances at Berks Jazz Fest. Maysa is featured with Incognito on Saturday, April 14, at 10 p.m. at DoubleTree by Hilton Reading. Maysa shares how she grew as a singer with Incognito and the positive uplifting music. Maysa also is part of Kirk Whalum’s Gospel According to Jazz Celebration on Sunday, April 15, at 6 p.m., at the Scottish Rite Cathedral. She shares her excitement about being a part of GATJ show.  Maysa also talks about how her Facebook Live Streaming has grown on Sunday nights with Maysa’s Karoke Sundays. 

 

Elan Trotman
Elan Trotman talks with Diane Dayton of Cool Jazz Cafe about his appearances at the Berks Jazz Fest. Elan is bringing The Caribbean Connection to Berks with special guests Bernie Williams and Nestor Torres on Saturday, April 14, at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at Club ECP at the DoubleTree by Hilton Reading. Elan also will also be a part of the Berks All- Star Jazz Jam on Thursday, April 12, at DoubleTree and Gerald Veasley’s Midnight Jams the same weekend at The Inn at Reading. Elan shares thoughts about his “Never Lose Your Drive Foundation,” and how life changing his music education program has been in Barbados, providing instruments, instruction and support.


Erich Cawalla

Erich Cawalla shares time with Diane Dayton of Cool Jazz Cafe about his appearances at the Berks Jazz Fest, including Jazzin’ Up the Pops with the Reading Pops Orchestra on Sunday, April 8, at 3:00 p.m. at the Miller Center for the Arts when he presents new music arrangements from his upcoming CD. Since 1996, Erich has been involved with the Berks Jazz Fest starting with the Berks County All-Star Jazz Band. He talks about the opportunities it has provided.  Erich lists his many other performances with various groups at local venues during the fest.  As a music teacher, Erich is making a difference with music education in the community.

 

Chieli Minucci
Chieli Minucci talks about his performances at the Berks Jazz Fest with Diane Dayton. The fest kicks off on Friday, April 6, and Chieli brings the Special EFX All-Stars to the Inn at Reading at 7:30 p.m. with Eric Marienthal, Lao Tizer, Karen Briggs and Gerald Veasley; he gives insight to the direction of the band and what to expect that night. Chieli will also be on stage at the high energy and spontaneous Midnight Jams hosted by Gerald Veasley on Friday and Saturday nights April 6 & 7, also at the Inn at Reading.  As a part of the Remembering Chuck Loeb evening on Sunday, April 8, at 7 p.m. at Santander Performing Arts Center, Chieli reflects on Chuck and shares how they first met. Chieli also fondly remembers his own first performance at Berks Jazz Fest over two decades ago.


Kirk Whalum
Grammy-winning saxophonist Kirk Whalum talks to Diane Dayton about his numerous performances during the Berks Jazz Fest. As a member of Fourplay, Kirk, who offers his thoughts on Chuck, will be part of the Remembering Chuck Loeb tribute on Sunday, April 8, 7:00 p.m., Santander Performing Arts Center. Kirk discusses his performances with the Berks All-Star Jazz Jam on Thursday, April 12, 8 p.m., DoubleTree by Hilton Reading, and with The Heart & Soul of Sax and on Friday, April 13, 7:00p.m., Scottish Rite Cathedral.  Kirk Whalum’s Gospel According to Jazz Celebration is set for 6:00 p.m. at the Scottish Rite Cathedral on the closing day of the fest. Kirk shares about his podcast “Bible in Your Ear,” and he teases us with his upcoming project with international collaborations.


Gerald Veasley
World-renowned contemporary bassist Gerald Veasley talks with Diane Dayton about his performances during the Berks Jazz Fest, including his performance Friday, April 6, with Special EFX All- Stars, 7:30 p.m. at the Inn at Reading. Gerald also hosts the midnight jams Friday and Saturday each weekend at The Inn at Reading. Gerald is co-musical director, along with Rick Braun, for the Berks All-Star Jazz Jam on Thursday, April 12, at 8 p.m., at Double Tree by Hilton — and an instructor at the RMF Project Penske Jazz Jam with  Mike Eben at the Inn at Reading on Monday, April 9, at 7 p.m. Gerald reflects on Chuck Loeb and the Remembering Chuck Loeb Tribute scheduled on Sunday, April 8, at 7 p.m. at Santander Performing Arts Center.
