DR. LONNIE SMITH TRIO
featuring JONATHAN KREISBERG and JOHNATHAN BLAKE
Tickets: $39 (General Admission)
Dr. Lonnie Smith, a 2017 NEA Jazz Master, is a superlative Hammond B3 jazz organist and composer who, in a career spanning more than 50 years, has been featured on more than 70 jazz, blues, and rhythm-and-blues recordings. He is considered one of the premier purveyors of funk/soul jazz.
Throughout his career, Smith has brought jazz into other genres, such as funk and rock, creating album-long tributes to artists such as Jimi Hendrix and Beck and covering everyone from the Beatles to the Eurythmics.
All the while, whether leading a trio or a 15-piece band, he maintained his telltale sound on the organ. His funky organ playing has been in demand by hip-hop groups since the 1990s.
In 2012, Smith launched his own record label, Pilgrimage Records, before returning to the Blue Note label for his 2016 release Evolution.
Among the honors bestowed upon Smith are DownBeat’s Best Organist honors (1969) and numerous Organist/Keyboards Player of the Year awards by the Jazz Journalists Association. Both the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame (2009) and Jazz Organ Fellowship (2011) elevated Smith to the ranks of their honorees.
Guitarist Jonathan Kreisberg has been steadily building his name as one of the most compelling composer/performers in Jazz.
Combining timeless melodicism with forward thinking lines and textures, His style and approach has created a strong following of fans around the world.
Johnathan Blake, one of the most accomplished drummers of his generation known for his powerful, evocative drumming and fully rounded artistry, has proven himself a complete and endlessly versatile musician.
Blake’s gift for composition and band leading, so ably demonstrated on his 2012 recording debut The Eleventh Hour, reflects years of live and studio experience across the aesthetic spectrum.
Blake is the son of renowned jazz violinist John Blake Jr. — himself a stylistic chameleon and an important ongoing influence.
SOUTH Kitchen & Jazz Parlor in Philadelphia has been honored by Downbeat Magazine as one of the Great Jazz Venues of 2015 and this special concert is capturing that ambience with the SOUTH Jazz Parlor at Berks.
