Bob James previews Fourplay concert at Berks Jazz Fest

And the band plays on … while not forgetting.

Fourplay lost its beloved guitarist, musical composer and soulmate Chuck Loeb in 2017.

The group has celebrated Loeb’s life and music since his passing and is deeply appreciative that he shared his love, life and music with them, confident that his musical spirit lives on forever.

Grammy-winning saxophonist Kirk Whalum has replaced Loeb in the Fourplay lineup, bringing his exquisite ability to the immense talents of bassist Nathan East, keyboardist Bob James and drummer Harvey Mason.

Personnel changes are nothing new to Fourplay. The original members were James, East, Mason and Lee Ritenour. Ritenour left the group in 1997 and was replaced by Larry Carlton, who in turn left Fourplay in 2010 and was replaced by Loeb.

Through the transitions Fourplay remains one of the genre’s best-ever contemporary jazz bands and for over a quarter century, the legend of this seminal group has grown as it always is pushing the idiom forward in both its jazz and pop directions.

Fourplay maintains its mastery with modern touches and classic musicianship. Its beautiful arrangements and tasty licks have made the quartet world renowned.

Exploring the limitless possibilities of jazz has allowed the quartet to evolve musically, drawing elements from a wide range of styles to hone its own unique, innovative and uncompromising sound.

It is the musical exploration that keeps the journey going as Fourplay continues to be one of the most intuitive, forward-thinking and focused groups in modern jazz.
