West Coast Jam is a new, evolving project fresh to Berks Jazz Fest fans and who better to helm it than Richard Elliot, Rick Braun and Norman Brown?

All three acclaimed artists have roots in the West Coast jazz vibe.

“West Coast Jam” is a track on Elliot’s 2016 Summer Madness album, which was produced by Braun. On the album, Elliot’s signature sax work is augmented by Braun’s trumpet.

Although he’s called a smooth jazz artist, Elliot is equally at home with most rock & roll and the kind of classic R&B performed by the group Tower of Power. For five years in the 1980s, he was a big part of the classic R&B band’s horn-based sound. The Scottish-born Elliot was raised in Los Angeles, where he quickly became a fan of classic West Coast R&B.

Braun is an Allentown native who moved to the West Coast years ago and is known for his high-energy enthusiasm on stage. He is a veteran purveyor of the smooth jazz sound.

Grammy winner Brown is a superlative smooth jazz guitarist and singer, often compared to George Benson. One of his memorable CDs is 2004’s West Coast Coolin’. Brown is on close intimate terms with his audience. For almost two decades, it has been an engaging, mutually rewarding relationship with the multitalented guitarist, composer and singer offering tasty tidbits of classic R&B and contemporary jazz to the delight of his fans.
